Let’s face it—grant writing is the academic equivalent of repeatedly slamming your head against a brick wall. It’s like reciting statistics in Latin. It’s frustrating, tedious. And somehow, despite your brilliant ideas and groundbreaking research, you still get rejected. More often than a teenager asking for prom dates.

But what if I told you there’s a better way to secure grant funding? Not a perfect way, because nothing in this chaotic universe is perfect, but a way that makes the whole process a lot less painful.

While you have been busy formatting references and tweaking your methodology paragraphs at 3 a.m., artificial intelligence (AI) assistants have evolved. From glorified spell-checkers, AI tools have become legitimate research partners. These digital tools won’t win you a Nobel Prize (yet). Still, they might help you win something almost as important: funding.

Here is a straightforward breakdown of how these AI assistants can transform your grant-writing process:

ChatGPT is the popular kid everyone knows. It is a powerful AI assistant that helps refine methodology sections and analyze data. It’s great for creating clear, concise writing that sounds more polished than the late-night drafts of a tired scientist.

However, for the really powerful stuff—DeepResearch—expect to pay $200/month. It could be better spent on 40 cups of lab coffee or one really nice bottle of “I just got rejected again” whiskey. But for solution check, see “Perplexity”!

Claude is the thoughtful philosophy major among AI assistants, some say it is creative like crazy. Also excellent at helping you articulate the broader impacts of your research without sounding like you’re promising to solve climate change or save the world in one three-year project.

Here’s where things get interesting. While OpenAI is charging scientists $200/month for DeepResearch, Perplexity just implemented DeepSeek as a local large language model (also known as “AI”). Unlike OpenAI’s paid options, you can get comparable research capabilities for free. That’s right—the same deep literature search and synthesis capabilities without putting a dent in your research budget.

Here are some practical ways you can integrate AI assistants into your grant-writing workflow:

  • Literature review without the existential dread: Feed your research question into an AI, and watch as they compile relevant papers, summarize findings, and identify gaps with greater speed
  • Simplify Jargon for Clarity: Your brilliant ideas deserve to be presented clearly, not obscured by complex academic speak. AI assistants can help translate your specialized knowledge into grant-speak that even non-specialist reviewers can appreciate.
  • Justify Your Budget Effectively: AI assistants can help you explain why you need that $50,000 piece of equipment, without sounding like you’re planning to take it home on weekends.
  • Address Reviewer Feedback Efficiently: Feed previous rejections to your AI assistant and get suggestions for addressing concerns, eliminating the emotional frustration.

Daniel, a biochemist turned leukemia researcher, isn’t just offering theoretical advice—he’s actively using these AI tools to secure funding for his own work.

On top, since beginning of 2023, Daniel has conducted 148 workshops, empowering 6,904 scientists and science associated folks. His strategies are practical and proven, designed to empower scientists facing the same challenges you do.

Let’s be clear: AI assistants won’t magically guarantee grant approval. They can’t fix weak research questions or flawed experimental designs. However they can boost your creativity, provide fresh perspectives, and eliminate busywork— freeing up more time for actual research.

With free tools like Perplexity and AI assistants like Claude improving your workflow, there’s no reason not to give them a try. Unless, of course, you enjoy the endless cycle of late-night formatting and revisions.

Join our upcoming webinar to see these AI tools in action and learn how to integrate them into your grant-writing workflow. Because let’s face it: what’s better than writing a grant? Getting that grant funded.
