Science Communication Award 2024

About the Climate and Health Science Communication Award

The Climate and Health Science Communication Award is hosted by scientifyRESEARCH together with financial support from the Karger Foundation of Karger Publishers and the Letten Prize.


This is an opportunity for all climate and health researchers worldwide to showcase their research to the general public and be in to win three prizes to further their science communication efforts.

Award benefits

Three award winners will be selected:

  • One prize winner / winning team will receive 4,000 EUR for further science communication support and a personal prize of 1000 EUR. 
  • The other two finalists will receive 500 EUR each.

Competition entry requirements

Interested applicants are requested to submit a registration form to indicate interest and to receive relevant updates on the competition.


Applicants must submit a 1000-word essay written for a general audience.


  • This essay must be based on a recently published, peer-reviewed scientific journal article related to the topic of “climate and health”.
  • This original journal article must have been peer-reviewed and published online between January 1, 2021 – July 31, 2024 in a reputable scientific journal.

Eligibility criteria

The competition is open to climate and health researchers worldwide. 


Applicants must be:

  •  Affiliated with reputable academic research institutions / universities worldwide*
  • Author/s** of the recently published, peer-reviewed scientific article on which the essay is based

*The institutions must not be situated in countries or territories currently subject to embargoes by the UN, USA, or the EU.

**Applicants may choose to enter the competition independently or as part of an author team. If entering as a team, all authors entering the competition must also be authors of the scientific article on which the essay is based. All authors must nominate one bank account in a non-embargoed country to receive the prize money.

Competition timeline

Timeline for the competition is as follows:


June 20, 2024:

Application opens, applicants are encouraged to submit asap to maximize online exposure.


June – September

Entries meeting editorial standards are published online continuously.


September 16, 2024

Final submission date.



Finalists announced online.

Competition scope

Climate and health research is a broad area that intersects multiple academic disciplines, involving environmental science, public health, medicine, social sciences, engineering and more. We have an inclusive definition of “climate and health” in this Science Communication Competition. We welcome all topics at the intersection between climate and health, including but not limited to:

  • Climate Change and Mental Health
  • Air Quality and Respiratory Health
  • Vector-Borne Diseases
  • Sustainable Healthcare Systems
  • Health Impact Assessment of Climate Policies


We recognize the value of individual action and therefore especially welcome submissions that provide potential solutions to mitigate the impact of climate change.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to: 

  • Behavioral Change and Public Health

  • Community-Based Interventions

  • Green Healthcare Practices

  • Sustainable Diets

  • Active Transportation

  • Home and Workplace Energy Efficiency

Selection criteria

The following selection criteria are used to identify the three winners of the Climate and Health Science Communication Award.


1. Entry must meet our basic editorial standard

All suitable entries that meet a basic editorial standard will be published online as part of the scientifyRESEARCH blog. These basic editorial standard include***:

  • Authors meet the eligibility requirements
  • Essay meets the entry requirements
  • Content of essay is factually correct and based on the authors’ recently published, peer-reviewed scientific article
  • Any use of AI tools are for support purposes only and the authors take full responsibility for the content of their essays****

***The final decision for all content published on is with the team at scientifyRESEARCH.  

****Usage of AI supporting tools: The use of AI supporting tools are allowed; however, the authors must clearly describe which tools and how these were used in the footnote of the essay.


2. Essays are shortlisted based on traffic data

Essays published online are shortlisted for assessment by the jury based on online traffic data. Participants are strongly encouraged to share their essays in innovative ways to maximize the online exposure of their competition entries.


3. Online pitch competition

Five finalists are selected by the jury to present their essay in a 3-minute presentation at our online award ceremony in December.


4. Final jury votes

Three winners for the Climate and Health Science Communication are selected and presented by the jury during the online award ceremony.
