The 2024 ASPIRE for Top Scientists (Adopting Sustainable Partnerships for Innovative Research Ecosystem) from the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) supports Japan-based researchers who already have an outstanding research record both domestically and internationally as top researchers in their field, who have received ample research funds from other contract research funds, etc., and who will lead international collaborative research that meets the objectives of the program.

The call welcomes collaborative research projects in AI and Information, Biotechnology, Energy, Quantum, Materials, Semiconductors, and Telecommunications. Participating countries include Japan, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, European Union, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and United States. The funding provides up to 500 million JPY (including indirect costs, which account for 30% of the total direct cost) for up to 5 years. Support will be provided to research teams that conduct collaborative research with researchers in the applicable fields and partner countries and regions of this call.

The following points are requirements for each proposal:

  • Each research team must include at least a researcher who will travel to the partner country to conduct research activities there for about one year.
  • Researchers from the partner country must be invited and included in the Japan-side research team.

A minimum of 70% of the overall direct expenses must be assigned specifically to endeavors that advance the program objectives of (1) establishing and broadening global research networks to facilitate innovative research and development, and (2) establishing a durable presence in the international research landscape by encouraging international talent exchange and fostering research prospects for emerging scholars.
