The Boosting Fact-checking Activities in Europe initiative, backed by the European Media and Information Fund (EMIF), aims to support projects led by independent fact-checking organizations. These organizations play a crucial role in mitigating the adverse effects of disinformation on public discourse and democratic processes.

Applicants must be legal entities that employ fact-checkers and adhere to recognized ethical and professional standards. Individual entities eligible for submission include:

  1. Small-sized independent fact-checking and news media organizations with up to 50 employees and up to €10 million in turnover or total balance sheet.
  2. Non-governmental organizations.
  3. Universities.
  4. Research centers.
  5. Educational institutions.
  6. Non-profit organizations.

Consortia proposals are eligible if submitted by any of the entities mentioned above, along with news media organizations, regardless of their for-profit status or size, provided that the consortium includes one or more entities listed above.

Only applications from legal entities and consortium members established in the EU, EFTA, or UK are eligible. In light of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and its impact across Europe, this Call for Proposals welcomes applications that involve collaborations with Ukrainian fact-checking organizations and journalists. While Ukrainian organizations are not eligible as funded partners, costs related to such collaborations, such as subcontracting costs, will be considered eligible.

Funding of up to 80,000 EUR is available per project for scale-up projects lasting 12 months. For Urgent Actions projects, funding of up to 55,000 EUR is available for a duration of 6 months.

Applications are open until June 28, 2024.
