The Rhodes Scholarships for East Africa

The Rhodes Scholarship is a fully funded, full-time, postgraduate award that enables talented young people from around the world to study at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. The Rhodes Scholarships for East Africa offers one scholarship each year.

Applicants must:

  • be a citizen of Burundi, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania or Uganda.
  • have been resident in one or more of the countries listed above, or in Kenya, for at least five of the last ten years.
  • must meet either of the below criteria:
    i. be aged 18-23 on 1 October 2024 (i.e. you must have been born after 1 October 2000 and before 2 October 2006); OR (for older candidates who completed their first undergraduate degree later than usual)
    ii. be under the age of 27 on 1st October 2024 (i.e. have been born after 1 October 1997) AND you must also have completed your first undergraduate degree on or after July 1, 2023.

The Rhodes Scholarship covers Oxford University course fees, as well as providing an annual stipend, from which Scholars pay all living expenses, including accommodation. Funding duration is dependent on the length of the course, e.g. PhD funding is available for 3 years.
