Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP)

The Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) is a Sweden-based private initiative for strategically motivated basic research, education and faculty recruitment in artificial intelligence, autonomous systems and software technology. The program’s mission is to build a world-leading platform for academic research that interacts with leading companies in Sweden to develop knowledge and competence for the future.

The current strategic instruments used by WASP to achieve its goals include:

  • A challenging research program
  • A national graduate school
  • Strategic international faculty recruitment
  • Research Arenas
  • Internationalization by exclusive university partnerships
  • Communication, events and networking

The main focus of the research within WASP is artificial intelligence and autonomous systems acting in collaboration with humans, adapting to and learning from their environment through sensors, information and knowledge, forming intelligent systems-of-systems. Software is the main enabler in these systems and is an integrated research theme of the program. The research area of artificial intelligence is organized in two tracks – one focusing on Machine Learning and Explainable AI (MLX) and the other on mathematical foundations of AI. Autonomous systems and software constitute the two other research tracks in the program.

The research is conducted at eight Swedish universities: Chalmers University of Technology, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Linköping University, Lund University, Umeå University, Örebro University, Uppsala University and Luleå University of Technology. And collaboration with Swedish industry runs throughout several parts of WASP.

A majority of the research in WASP is conducted through PhD student projects spanning the full range of WASP topics. Exciting projects are also conducted by the newly recruited faculty and already established senior researchers on our partner universities. On top of that, several projects are executed by postdocs.
