The Call for Advancement of Biomarkers to Daily Practice from the Dutch Cancer Society (KWF) supports collaborative, multidisciplinary studies to propel biomarker candidates toward clinical implementation. Applications are open to researchers in the Netherlands.

  • Research Approach: The project must be conducted by a multidisciplinary consortium involving at least four participating parties, potentially including private partners, to cover a wide range of disciplines.
  • Research Phase: Projects can be in the creation of modality, preclinical, or clinical stages.
  • Cancer Types: All types of cancer are eligible for consideration.
  • Biomarkers: Projects should focus on promising biomarkers that have not yet been validated for their role in clinical settings.
  • Data Sharing: A sustainable data sharing plan, adhering to FAIR principles, must be implemented.
  • Team Composition: The project should involve a multidisciplinary team with support from a project manager.
  • Developmental Plan: A detailed plan outlining the project’s development is required.
  • Patient Focus: Projects must address patient needs.
  • Participating Parties: All necessary expertise, including biostatisticians and HTA experts, must be included. Public-private collaborations are encouraged, with additional information potentially required for for-profit partners as deemed necessary by KWF.

Applicants may apply for up to 2 million EUR, with project durations ranging from 2 to 5 years. If the for-profit private partner, with more than 250 full-time employees, actively participates in the project, they are regarded as a participating entity and are required to provide financial support. This entails contributing 10% co-financing of the requested budget from KWF, which can be in the form of in-kind contributions or cash.
