The Research Project Grants, supported by the Barts Charity, aim to support innovative health-related research endeavors with the potential to significantly improve the lives of individuals residing in East London. Projects should generate outcomes of international significance, potentially attracting sustained support from other funding bodies.


  • Lead Applicant: Must hold a position at Barts Health NHS Trust, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at Queen Mary University of London, or School of Health Sciences at City, University of London. Must have an independent academic, clinical, or research post with salary sourced from one of these organizations or be supported by a fellowship or personal award. Postdoctoral researchers or clinical fellows are ineligible.
  • Co-applicants: Up to three co-applicants allowed, with external expertise permissible upon justification.

Funding ranges from 75,000 to 600,000 GBP for up to 36 months, or 48 months if a PhD studentship is included. Typical PhD studentship applications range from 160,000 to 190,000 GBP, while research project applications typically seek 200,000 to 350,000 GBP.

This is a bi-annual fund and the next applications close on June 19, 2024.
