The Edward Guiliano Global Undergraduate Fellowship from the Modern Language Association aims to encourage students in languages, literatures, and related fields to pursue transformative experiences by exploring research, learning, and professional opportunities beyond their immediate community.
Through this program, the Modern Language Association will provide undergraduate students in MLA-related disciplines with awards to support travel, research for work, and related proposals that align with any of the following four areas:
- Research, critical-creative, or scholarly activities taking place more than two hundred miles from the fellow’s university or home (city/country)
- Presenting at national and global conferences, arts events, and symposiums
- Participating in courses, working groups, or other learning opportunities offered by nonprofit organizations appropriate to the student’s program of study
- Participating in academically grounded community engagement partnerships, including but not limited to volunteer work, internships, and collaborative research
Applications are open to undergraduate students who are actively enrolled full-time in an undergraduate program (two-year or four-year) in the United States or Canada, pursuing a course of study in a humanities field. Applicants must have an active MLA undergraduate membership. Proposed research travel must take place more than two hundred miles from the student’s home or home institution.
Awards can range from $750 to $5,000, with a typical award averaging $2,500. The MLA anticipates making up to twenty awards each year.
Applications close on December 8, 2026.
