The Pilot Award – acral melanoma funded by the Melanoma Research Alliance (MRA) supports established researchers who have potentially transformative ideas for acral melanoma research, do not have extensive preliminary data but articulate a clear hypothesis and translational goals. Acral melanoma accounts for approximately 2-3% of all melanomas and affects people of all races and ethnicities but does disproportionately impact people of color. Priority will be given to proposals that focus on the following areas:

  • Understanding how to effectively target NF1 loss, CRKL and GAB2 amplification, and/or TERT alterations in acral melanoma;
  • Characterizing the anti-tumor immune response to acral melanoma, including identification of prognostic indicators of response/non-response, and/or development of resistance to checkpoint immunotherapy;
  • Identifying and developing novel immune, targeted and combination approaches for preclinical testing in acral melanoma models.

Applicants should be at least 5 years beyond their first independent academic appointment. Applications are open to US and international applicants. The Award provides 50,000 USD/year for 2 years. Indirect costs are not allowed, applicants may include fringe benefits for salaries in the proposal.

Full applications close on November 3, 2023.
