The Young Investigator Award – Acral melanoma from the Melanoma Research Alliance (MRA) supports new independent investigators working on acral melanoma. Acral melanoma is a rare and difficult-to-treat form of melanoma that arises on the palms, soles, or beneath the nails. Acral melanoma accounts for approximately 2-3% of all melanomas and affects people of all races and ethnicities but does disproportionately impact people of color. Priority will be given to proposals that focus on the following areas:

  • Understanding how to effectively target NF1 loss, CRKL and GAB2 amplification, and/or TERT alterations in acral melanoma;
  • Characterizing the anti-tumor immune response to acral melanoma, including identification of prognostic indicators of response/non-response, and/or development of resistance to checkpoint immunotherapy;
  • Identifying and developing novel immune, targeted and combination approaches for preclinical testing in acral melanoma models.

Applicants must be in the first 5 years of their first independent, full-time academic faculty appointment at an academic, non-profit research institution in the USA or worldwide. MRA encourages applications from a diverse pool of investigators with respect to race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, national origin, and disability. The Award provides 85,000 USD/year for up to 3 years. Indirect costs are not allowed. Applicants may apply for fringe benefits.

The applicant eligibility checklist is due: October 20, 2023. Full application due: November 3, 2023.
