The Research and Development program, administered by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), addresses key challenges in preserving and accessing humanities collections. It supports projects aimed at improving preservation methods for cultural heritage materials and enhancing modes of organization and access.

Research and Development projects are encouraged to address one or more of the following areas of special interest:

  • Furthering theory and practice in core heritage collections work
  • Preserving audiovisual and digital heritage
  • Applying artificial intelligence to collections-based activities
  • Conserving the material past
  • Protecting cultural heritage
  • Stewarding collections by and with underrepresented communities
  • Responding to the impact of climate change

Projects at all stages of development are eligible. The program provides a maximum of 100,000 USD for Tier I projects for 1-2 years. For Tier II projects, a maximum budget of 350,000 USD will be provided for 1-3 years. Applications close on May 21, 2024.
