Global Market Exploration Workshop for Research-Based Innovations

Introduction to the workshop

We help your researchers explore how to take their research-based innovation beyond the lab and into global markets, even if they have never engaged with internationalisation, market discovery, or commercial ecosystems before. For many academic founders, understanding where their solution fits globally is one of the hardest early challenges. Limited exposure to industry, unfamiliar stakeholders, and the complexity of different markets can make it unclear where to start. This workshop provides a structured, research-specific introduction to international opportunity discovery, enabling participants to identify early markets, understand entry points, and begin validating commercial potential beyond their home context.

Through practical examples and guided exercises, participants learn how to analyze market needs, map relevant ecosystems, and identify the first conversations that matter. Whether your institution supports spinout teams, early founders, or researchers exploring commercial pathways, this workshop equips them with the tools to make informed decisions about international readiness.

More about the workshop

This workshop can be tailored to your institutional needs and delivered online or in person.

The session can range from a concise 2-hour introduction to a full-day interactive programme, including ecosystem mapping, market assessment exercises, stakeholder segmentation, and opportunity roadmapping. Optional 1:1 follow-up consultations can also be added.

Participants will:

  1. Understand how to identify promising international markets

Learn structured ways to assess global opportunities, including identifying unmet needs, understanding who benefits from their innovation, and recognising signals that indicate early market potential.

  2. Map relevant ecosystems and early entry points

Discover how to identify local stakeholders - such as industry partners, early adopters, testbeds, public-sector actors, or innovation hubs - and how they influence early commercial activities like pilots, validation, and collaborations.

  3. Evaluate market–solution fit and early barriers

Gain insight into how different markets evaluate new technologies, what evidence they expect, and what practical challenges (regulatory, cultural, operational) founders should consider when exploring a new region.

  4. Build a tailored international exploration roadmap

Develop a clear action plan outlining priority markets, who to speak with first, what assumptions to test, and how to structure early conversations that lead to meaningful insights and opportunities.
