The Sustainable Development of the Arctic: Call for Pre-Proposals from NordForsk supports research collaboration among Nordic countries, Canada, and the USA to advance knowledge on ensuring the sustainable development of the Arctic region.

The pre-proposal must address at least two of the three areas of science as defined by the European Research Council: Life science; Physical Sciences & Engineering; Social Sciences and Humanities. The call does not have specific thematic requirements; however, applicants may draw inspiration from three keywords—Security, Natural Resources, and/or Societal Changes—when formulating their research proposals. Moreover, the following objectives are pivotal to the call:

  • Promotion of interdisciplinary approaches
  • Advancement of sustainable development efforts
  • Enhancement of Arctic Added Value
  • Incorporation of Indigenous perspectives

Every project consortium must incorporate partners from research-performing institutions in a minimum of three Nordic countries. In the event that the project owner is a research institution in the USA or Canada, the project is required to designate a co-host institution from one of the Nordic countries.
Funding will be provided for 3-4 years.

  • Available budget for Nordic partners ranges from 18-24 million NOK per project.
  • Available budget for Canadian partners ranges from 2.5-4 million CAD per project.
  • The budget for US partners depends on specific program guidelines.

This is a two-stage call with a pre-proposal deadline on June 4, 2024.
